BAC calculator for a quick blood alcohol estimate

Enter your sex, body weight, what you drank and how long ago you started. The calculator applies the Widmark formula in your browser and returns a range, not a single number, together with a rough time until your level falls to about 0.00. Nothing you type leaves your device.

Your drinks and timing

Fill in every field. Add one row per drink, or one row per type of drink with the total volume.

This is an estimate. It cannot tell you whether you are safe or legal to drive. If you have been drinking, do not drive.

A calculator only estimates. To measure, a fuel cell breathalyzer reads your actual breath.

Read this before you use the number

This is an estimate. It cannot tell you whether you are safe or legal to drive. If you have been drinking, do not drive.

The result describes an average body under textbook conditions. Your own level can be higher than the top of the range, and impairment begins well before any legal threshold.

How the BAC estimate works

The calculator uses the Widmark formula, a method published by the Swedish scientist Erik Widmark in the 1930s and still taught in forensic toxicology courses. It starts with the grams of pure alcohol you drank and spreads them through the water in your body.

Alcohol in grams comes from each drink row: volume in ounces, times 29.57 to get milliliters, times the ABV, times 0.789, which is the density of ethanol. A 12 oz beer at 5% ABV holds about 14 grams, which is the US standard drink.

That amount is divided by your body weight in grams multiplied by a distribution factor called r. The factor reflects how much of your body is water. The calculator uses an average of 0.68 for men and 0.55 for women, then widens the result to cover people above and below that average.

Finally it subtracts what your liver has likely cleared since your first drink. The textbook average elimination rate is about 0.015 BAC per hour, and healthy adults commonly fall somewhere between 0.010 and 0.020. The low end of your range assumes faster clearance and a higher r, the high end assumes slower clearance and a lower r.

  • Grams of alcohol, from volume and ABV of each drink
  • Divided by body weight times the distribution factor r
  • Minus about 0.015 for each hour since the first drink
  • Shown as a range, because both r and elimination vary from person to person

Why a BAC estimate differs from a real reading

A formula assumes all the alcohol is already absorbed. In real life absorption takes roughly 30 to 90 minutes and depends heavily on food. A full stomach slows it down and flattens the peak, while drinking fast on an empty stomach pushes the peak higher and earlier.

Body composition matters more than weight alone. Two people who both weigh 180 lb can carry very different amounts of body water, so the same drinks produce different levels.

Pours are rarely standard. A restaurant glass of wine is often 6 to 9 oz rather than 5, craft beers can run 7 to 10% ABV, and mixed drinks often contain more than one shot. Typing the real volume and strength makes the biggest single difference to the estimate.

Medication, fatigue, illness, liver health and hormonal changes can all shift how alcohol behaves. None of them can be captured by a few input fields.

  • Absorption is not instant, so a recent drink may still be rising
  • Body water varies even at the same weight
  • Real pours are larger and stronger than the standard
  • Health and medication change how you process alcohol

From an estimate to a measurement

If you want to know what is in your breath rather than what a formula predicts, a breath tester is the tool for that. Fuel cell testers react specifically to alcohol and hold their calibration better than cheaper semiconductor sensors.

Before choosing one, compare sensor type, published accuracy and how the maker handles recalibration in our best breathalyzer ranking, or go straight to the fuel cell breathalyzers we compare from published specifications.

Using the BAC calculator by weight

Weight sets the volume your alcohol is diluted in, so the same drinks give a lighter person a higher reading. At the moment of absorption, with no time elapsed, one standard drink comes out at roughly 0.045 for a 100 lb man and roughly 0.023 for a 200 lb man.

Enter your current weight in pounds as accurately as you can. Rounding by 20 lb shifts the estimate noticeably at higher drink counts. To see the whole grid at once, open our printable bac chart by weight and number of drinks.

Weight2 drinks, men2 drinks, women
120 lb about 0.076 about 0.094
160 lb about 0.057 about 0.070
200 lb about 0.045 about 0.056
240 lb about 0.038 about 0.047

These figures are approximate, assume full absorption and no elimination, and use average distribution factors.

BAC calculator for women

Choosing Female in the calculator changes the distribution factor from 0.68 to 0.55. On average women carry a higher share of body fat and a lower share of water than men of the same weight, so alcohol is less diluted and the level climbs higher.

Research also points to lower activity of the stomach enzyme that breaks down a small part of alcohol before it reaches the blood, and to hormonal phases that may change absorption. The formula cannot follow those individual differences, which is why the result is a band and the upper edge deserves the most attention.

If your body composition sits far from the average, for example a very athletic build or a high body fat percentage, treat the estimate as even rougher.

BAC calculator questions

How accurate is a BAC calculator

It gives a reasonable ballpark for an average person, but individual readings can land well outside the range because of food, body composition, pour size and health.

Why does the calculator show a range instead of one number

Body water and elimination speed differ between people, so a single number would hide real uncertainty, and the range shows both the optimistic and the cautious case.

What elimination rate does the BAC calculator use

It centers on about 0.015 per hour and spans roughly 0.010 to 0.020, which covers most healthy adults described in the forensic literature.

Does eating food change the result

Food mainly slows absorption and lowers the peak, which the formula does not model directly, so after a big meal the real peak is often lower and later than the estimate.

Can I use the result to decide whether to drive

No, an estimate cannot establish whether you are safe or legal to drive, and impairment starts at levels well below the legal limit.

How long until my BAC reaches zero

The result shows a rough time to about 0.00, and the bac calculator over time draws the full decline curve hour by hour.

What is the legal alcohol limit in the US

For most adult drivers it is 0.08, Utah uses 0.05 and commercial drivers 0.04, as explained on our legal alcohol limit page.
