Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data the breathalyzer.io service collects, why we collect it, how long we keep it and what rights you have. We collect as little as we can and we never sell your data.

Last updated October 19, 2026

Who is responsible for your data

The controller of personal data processed through this website is the administrator of the breathalyzer.io service. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" refer to that administrator.

For any question about this policy or about your data, write to support@breathalyzer.io. We answer privacy requests by email.

What this policy covers

This policy applies to the website at breathalyzer.io, its tools (such as the BAC calculator and the breathalyzer finder), the email signup for our buyer's checklist and calibration reminders, and the emails we send after you confirm your address.

It does not apply to websites you reach through our links. When you follow a "Check price on Amazon" button, Amazon processes your data under its own privacy notice, cookie notice and terms. The same is true for manufacturer websites we link to. Please read their policies before you share data with them.

Data you give us when you sign up

When you request the buyer's checklist and calibration reminders, we collect:

  • Your email address.
  • A 6-digit confirmation code that we send to that address. We store only a protected form of the code (a hash), together with the time it expires, and we use it only to confirm that the address belongs to you.
  • The time you confirmed your address.
  • Your answers to the breathalyzer finder, if you opened the signup from a finder result. These answers (who the tester is for, how precise it needs to be, how often you will use it and how you will carry it) are optional and help us time reminders to the sensor type you picked.
  • The page or source from which you signed up, and campaign parameters in the link you used (UTM source, medium and campaign), if present.
  • Your IP address and browser user agent at the time of signup, which we use to prevent abuse such as automated or repeated fake signups.

We do not ask for your name, phone number, postal address, date of birth or payment details, and we do not need them.

Data we collect when you click an outbound link

Links to Amazon on our pages go through a short redirect on our own domain (an address that starts with /go/). When you click one, our server records which link was clicked, on which page, and when, together with the standard request data that every web server receives (IP address and browser user agent). We use this log to understand which guides and comparisons readers find useful and to detect broken or abused links.

We do not place advertising cookies, tracking pixels or third party ad tags on our pages. The click log stays on our own systems.

Data collected automatically

Like every website, our servers receive technical data with each request: IP address, browser user agent, the page requested, the referring page and the time. This data is written to server logs that we use for security, to keep the service running and to investigate errors.

Data that never leaves your browser

The BAC calculator and the breathalyzer finder run in your browser. The weight, drinks and times you enter into the calculator are not sent to us and are not stored by us. Finder answers are sent to us only if you choose to sign up from a finder result.

Why we use your data and on what basis

  • To send you the confirmation code and, after you confirm, the buyer's checklist, calibration reminders and occasional guide updates you asked for. Basis for EU visitors: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • To prevent abuse of the signup form and of our redirect links. Basis for EU visitors: our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure.
  • To understand which pages and comparisons are useful, using the outbound click log and aggregated counts. Basis for EU visitors: our legitimate interest in improving the site.
  • To answer your emails and privacy requests. Basis for EU visitors: our legitimate interest in replying, and our legal obligations where a request concerns your rights.
  • To comply with the law and to protect our rights if a legal claim arises.

We do not use your data for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you, and we do not build advertising profiles.

Cookies we use

We use only cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to work:

  • A session cookie that keeps the signup steps connected (for example, between entering your email and entering the code).
  • A security cookie (CSRF token) that protects forms against requests forged by other websites.

These cookies do not track you across other websites, are not used for advertising and expire when the session ends or soon after. Because we use only strictly necessary cookies, we do not show a cookie banner. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but the signup form may then stop working.

Amazon and other websites you visit through our links set their own cookies on their own domains, under their own policies.

Who we share data with

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share data only with service providers that help us run the site, and only as far as each one needs it:

  • A hosting provider that runs our servers and stores the website data, the signup records and the logs.
  • An email delivery provider that sends the confirmation codes, the checklist and the reminders.

These providers act on our instructions and may not use your data for their own purposes. We may also disclose data where the law requires it, for example in response to a valid legal order, or where it is necessary to protect the rights and safety of users or of the service.

International transfers

Our service is aimed at readers in the United States and the data is processed in the United States and, through our providers, possibly in other countries. Where data of EU visitors is transferred outside the European Economic Area, we rely on safeguards recognized by EU law, such as standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions.

How long we keep your data

  • Confirmed email signups, together with the related finder answers, source and UTM data: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. After you unsubscribe, we keep only your email address on a suppression list so that we do not email you again by mistake, unless you ask us to delete it completely.
  • Unconfirmed signups (where the code was never entered): deleted after a short period.
  • Confirmation codes: valid for 15 minutes and useless after that.
  • IP address and user agent stored with a signup: kept with the signup record for abuse prevention and deleted with it.
  • Outbound click log and server logs: kept for a limited time needed for security, troubleshooting and aggregated statistics, then deleted or reduced to counts that do not identify you.
  • Emails you send us: kept as long as needed to handle your request and for a reasonable time afterwards in case of follow-up questions.

Your privacy rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • Tell you whether we hold personal data about you and give you a copy of it.
  • Correct data that is inaccurate.
  • Delete your data.
  • Stop sending you emails. Every email we send has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also write to support@breathalyzer.io.

To make a request, email support@breathalyzer.io from the address the request concerns. We may ask you to confirm that the address is yours before we act. We answer without undue delay and in any case within the time the law requires.

Rights of California residents

If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended, gives you the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, the right to delete it, the right to correct it, the right to opt out of its sale or sharing and the right not to be discriminated against for using these rights. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of, but you may still send us a request. The categories we collect are identifiers (email address, IP address), internet activity (pages requested, outbound clicks, user agent) and the optional finder answers described above. You may use an authorized agent, in which case we may ask for proof of the authorization. We do not collect sensitive personal information for inferring characteristics about you.

Residents of other US states with consumer privacy laws have similar rights, and we honor the same requests regardless of where you live.

Rights of visitors from the European Union

If you are in the European Economic Area, the GDPR gives you the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and the right to object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

Children's privacy

This website is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to support@breathalyzer.io and we will delete it.

Our content about alcohol is general information for adults. Pages written for parents of teen drivers are addressed to the parents, not to the teens.

How we protect your data

We use encrypted connections (HTTPS) for the whole site, store confirmation codes only in protected form, limit access to signup records to the people who run the service, and keep the amount of data we collect small. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your data and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We do not track you across other websites, so a Do Not Track signal does not change how the site behaves. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of sale and sharing, which we already do not do.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the site or the law changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change materially affects how we use the email address you gave us, we will tell you by email before the change takes effect.
