BACtrack S80 breathalyzer review of the Pro Grade fuel cell model

The BACtrack S80 Pro, which the maker now sells simply as the BACtrack S80, is a standalone fuel cell breathalyzer from the brand's Pro Grade line. This review is based on the manufacturer's published specifications and public documentation, read together with the S80 operating instructions. Where two BACtrack pages give different figures for the same thing, both appear below so you can see the spread.

Quick verdict on the S80

The S80 is the BACtrack to look at if you test often and want a fuel cell sensor with a numeric tolerance printed by the maker. It trades pocket size and app features for a larger body, AA power rated for roughly 1,500 tests and a calibration that the maker says lasts longer than on its non Pro Grade units. It is a screening device, not an evidential instrument.

Who the BACtrack S80 suits

The S80 fits a household where several adults want a shared tester that lives in a drawer and gets used regularly. The long battery rating means fewer swaps, and the extra mouthpieces in the box make it easy to give each person their own. It also suits a small business owner who wants a consistent personal screening tool without moving up to an instrument built for formal workplace programs.

It is less suited to someone who wants to carry a tester every day. At nearly five ounces with batteries it belongs in a bag or glovebox rather than a pocket, and anyone who wants a log of past results will need to write them down, since the unit has no Bluetooth link.

What to know before buying the S80

The maker's pages disagree on two points, the upper detection limit and the dimensions. In practice the range question matters little for personal use, because both published figures sit far above levels a screening user cares about, but it is a reminder to read spec sheets carefully.

The accuracy figure is quoted at 0.100% BAC and 25 C. Some other models in the Pro Grade line quote their tolerance at 0.050% BAC, so the numbers are not a direct like for like comparison.

The S80 product page says it has been tested by, and meets the requirements of, DOT and NHTSA for a personal breath alcohol screening device. We have not matched that statement against the NHTSA Conforming Products List, and no S80 specific FDA 510(k) number appears on the maker's pages.

The operating instructions ask for a 20 minute wait after food, drink or smoke, and warn that skipping it can give a wrong reading and may harm the sensor. Our article on how long to wait before using a breathalyzer explains why residual mouth alcohol skews results.

Calibration and upkeep for the S80

BACtrack does not offer user calibration on this model. Instead the unit goes to the maker's paid send in service, where it receives a mechanical check, an air flow check and an accuracy check, and comes back in about 10 to 14 business days under the standard option. The fee covers return shipping while you pay to send it in.

The maker's buying guide recommends calibrating once a year, and its calibration page names the S80 among Pro Grade units that hold calibration longer than the rest of the range. Heavy daily use can shorten that window. If the unit fails its check, the maker either sends a replacement or refunds the fee with a discount toward a new device, depending on warranty status, and the standard warranty is one year. Our guide to calibrating a breathalyzer covers how to plan around the downtime.

How the S80 compares with other testers

Within BACtrack, the BACtrack Trace Professional breathalyzer uses the same Xtend sensor family in a slimmer body, while the C8 and C6 add app logging but publish no numeric tolerance. Across brands, the S80 sits in our fuel cell breathalyzer category next to models with replaceable sensor modules, which change the upkeep picture.
