Breathalyzer

Best breathalyzer for each use ranked by published specs

A keychain tester for the occasional night out and a handheld a sober living house uses every morning solve different problems, so this ranking starts with the use and then picks the model whose sensor, stated accuracy and calibration route fit it. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's published specifications and public documentation. The method is on our how we review breathalyzers page.

Breathalyzer comparison by sensor and calibration

Where a maker gives no number, the cell says so.

ModelSensorStated accuracyCalibrationBest for
BACtrack S80 Fuel cell, Pro Grade +/- 0.005 at 0.100% BAC Send-in service, yearly suggested Personal use where the number matters
BACtrack Trace Pro Fuel cell, Pro Grade +/- 0.005 at 0.050% BAC Send-in service, yearly suggested Pocket carry
BACtrack Mobile Fuel cell with breath pump +/- 0.005 at 0.050% BAC Send-in service, every 6 to 12 months App history
BACtrack C8 Fuel cell Not published by the maker Send-in service, interval not published Phone pairing with a built in display
BACtrack C6 Fuel cell Not published by the maker Send-in service, interval not published Keychain carry

AlcoMate Revo Fuel cell, replaceable module +/- 0.005 at 0.10% BAC Owner swaps module, 1,000 tests or yearly Frequent use, many users

Figures are the maker's published specifications.

A tolerance quoted at 0.050 and one quoted at 0.100 are not the same claim, as our most accurate breathalyzer ranking explains.

BACtrack S80 Pro as the all round personal pick

Fuel cell, Pro Grade
Sensor:
Xtend electrochemical fuel cell, Pro Grade
Stated accuracy:
+/- 0.005 at 0.100% BAC at 25 C
Detection range:
maker pages list an upper limit of either 0.400 or 0.500% BAC
Warm-up:
10 to 30 seconds, result in about 6 seconds
Power:
2 AA batteries, about 1,500 tests per set
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: an adult who wants one dependable handheld, and parents who need a number they can trust.

What to know: no app, no memory, and two different sets of dimensions on maker pages. BACtrack says it meets DOT and NHTSA requirements for a personal screening device, which we have not matched to the current NHTSA list. See the BACtrack S80 review.

BACtrack Trace Pro brings professional grade to a slim body

Fuel cell, Pro Grade
Sensor:
Xtend electrochemical fuel cell, Pro Grade
Stated accuracy:
+/- 0.005 at 0.050% BAC
Detection range:
0.000 to 0.400% BAC
Warm-up:
10 to 20 seconds, response in about 3 seconds
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: people who keep a tester in a jacket or glovebox, and small teams sharing one unit.

What to know: no Bluetooth, no stored results, unpublished display resolution, and maker pages differ on AA or AAA batteries. Read the BACtrack Trace professional breathalyzer review.

BACtrack Mobile Pro as the app based pick

Fuel cell with pump

BACtrack now sells this unit as the Mobile (BT-M5), while the box list still says Mobile Pro. A small pump draws breath across the sensor.

Sensor:
Xtend electrochemical fuel cell with breath pump
Stated accuracy:
+/- 0.005 at 0.050% BAC
Detection range:
0.000 to 0.400% BAC
Display:
none on the device, results and history in the app
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: anyone who wants a log of readings and keeps a phone at hand.

What to know: no phone means no result, the rechargeable battery is not replaceable, and the maker asks for a blow at least monthly to keep the sensor from drying out. More in the BACtrack Mobile Pro review.

BACtrack C8 and C6 as fuel cell testers that pair with a phone

Fuel cell

Both use the BluFire fuel cell. The C8 is a small handheld with its own display; the C6 hangs on a keychain and works in Standalone Mode or App Mode.

Stated accuracy:
not published by the maker for either
Detection range:
C6 0.000 to 0.300% BAC; C8 0.300 or 0.400% BAC depending on the maker document
Power:
1 AAA battery, about 250 tests
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: buyers who want fuel cell chemistry in a small package.

What to know: without a published tolerance they rank below the S80, Trace Pro and Mobile. Compare the BACtrack C8 review and the BACtrack C6 review.

AlcoMate Revo built for frequent testing

Fuel cell, replaceable module

Its PRISM sensor module arrives calibrated from the factory, and the owner replaces it rather than shipping the device in.

Sensor:
fuel cell with replaceable module
Stated accuracy:
+/- 0.005 at 0.10% BAC
Detection range:
0.000 to 0.400% BAC on a 4-digit LCD
Upkeep:
new module every 1,000 tests or yearly, whichever comes first
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: employers, rehab programs and households that test daily.

What to know: professional price band plus a recurring module cost, module types depend on purchase date, and warm-up and result times are not published by the maker. Its DOT approval claim could not be matched to an NHTSA list entry. See the AlcoMate Revo review.

BACtrack Go as the honest budget option

Semiconductor
Sensor:
semiconductor with BACtrack's MicroCheck burn-in process
Stated accuracy:
not published by the maker
Detection range:
0.000 to 0.400% BAC
Calibration:
manual says every six to twelve months, monthly with daily use
Spec source:
maker's published specifications

Who it suits: someone who tests a few times a year and wants a rough indication.

What to know: semiconductor sensors drift faster and can react to other substances, and one battery lasts roughly 50 to 75 tests. Our keychain breathalyzer page sets it beside the C6; full notes in the BACtrack Go keychain breathalyzer review.

Models we cover but do not rank for buying

The Draeger Alcotest 5820 is marked for law enforcement purposes only in the US and shown as end of sales on maker pages, so our draeger breathalyzer review carries no shopping link. The AlcoHAWK Pro is an older semiconductor model with documentation from 2005 and no maker site today; the AlcoHAWK Pro review points to current alternatives.

How to choose the best breathalyzer for you

Start with the sensor. If you will act on the number, a fuel cell is the sensible floor, because it reacts specifically to alcohol and holds calibration longer. Our fuel cell vs semiconductor breathalyzer page covers the chemistry.

Next, look for a published tolerance at a named BAC level. Wording like "professional grade accuracy" gives you nothing to check.

Then weigh the calibration path: send-in service means days without the device, a swappable module costs more per change but skips shipping. Our guide to calibrating a breathalyzer compares them.

Occasional personal checks:
a fuel cell keychain or compact handheld
Household or teen driver:
a full size fuel cell handheld with a published tolerance
Workplace or many users:
see professional breathalyzer
Any use:
wait at least 15 minutes after drinking, eating, smoking or mouthwash, or longer if the manual says so

The breathalyzer finder narrows it down.

Best breathalyzer questions

Which breathalyzer is the most accurate for personal use?

The BACtrack S80, Trace Pro and Mobile publish the tightest tolerance among consumer models here, +/- 0.005, each at the reference level its maker names.

Is a fuel cell breathalyzer worth the extra cost?

For anyone who will act on the reading, yes, because a fuel cell is alcohol specific and drifts less than a semiconductor sensor.

Are keychain breathalyzers good enough?

A fuel cell keychain such as the C6 is a reasonable personal check, while a semiconductor keychain such as the Go gives only a rough indication.

Why is there no price next to each model?

Amazon prices change often, so we describe price bands in words and the button opens the current listing.

Can a personal breathalyzer be used as evidence?

No, personal units are screening devices, and legal evidence comes from evidential instruments used under a formal procedure.
