Wall mounted breathalyzer units for venues and workplace entrances

A wall mounted breathalyzer stays in one place and serves everyone who walks past it. In a bar it is a courtesy check that guests use with a drinking straw, sometimes paying per test. At a factory gate or mine entrance it is part of access control, a passive test that can hold a turnstile shut until the reading clears the company's pass level. This page compares units whose makers publish specifications and covers power, calibration downtime and records.

Bars, clubs and public venues

Fuel cell, Pro Grade

Andatech Soberpoint 3, a wall unit with a replaceable fuel cell, a published tolerance of +/- 0.005 at 0.100% BAC, straw testing and coin or tap payment options.

Workplace entrance with turnstiles or gates

Andatech AccessPoint, a passive, mouthpiece-free unit that the maker says can be fitted to turnstiles, automatic doors and speed gates with an adjustable pass range.

Mines, construction and oil and gas sites

Lifeloc SENTINEL, an entry-point system with a full size fuel cell and adjustable cut-off levels, aimed at high-volume zero tolerance screening.

Small team that does not need a wall unit

BACtrack Trace Pro, a handheld Pro Grade fuel cell tester a supervisor can carry to the people being screened.

Two kinds of wall mounted breathalyzer

The first family serves public venues. A guest blows through a fresh drinking straw and reads the result on the unit's screen. Many venue units offer coin or cashless payment per test, so the check runs without staff, and the screen can show announcements between tests. The purpose is information, never permission to drive.

The second family serves workplace entry. Nobody touches a mouthpiece or straw: the worker blows toward a passive inlet, the unit compares the reading with the employer's pass level, and it can release a turnstile, door or time clock. Speed matters, because a shift change can bring dozens of people in a few minutes.

Every unit we found states a fuel cell sensor, and several use a replaceable sensor module so the station keeps working while the old sensor goes for recalibration. We did not find a coin-operated or wall unit from a US maker such as BACtrack or AlcoMate. BACtrack's current online catalog lists handheld and smartphone units only.

Andatech Soberpoint 3 for public venues

Fuel cell, Pro Grade
Sensor:
replaceable fuel cell sensor, specific testing mode
Accuracy:
+/- 0.005% BAC at 0.100% BAC
Response:
within 6 seconds, recovery 10 seconds
Calibration:
every 12 months with unlimited tests, and a replaceable sensor so there is no calibration downtime
Testing:
blow through an ordinary drinking straw, with coin and wave payment options
Power and display:
AC 110 to 240 V, LCD screen that can show announcements
Standard named by the maker:
Australian Standard AS3547:1997

Spec source: maker's published specifications

Who it suits: bars, clubs, stadium bars and event spaces that want guests to check themselves before deciding how to get home.

What to know: the maker names an Australian standard and does not name a US listing, data storage is not published, and pricing is by quote. We have no Amazon listing to point you to, so ask the maker or a local distributor.

Andatech AccessPoint for gated entrances

Sensor:
replaceable fuel cell sensor with passive testing
Accuracy:
+/- 0.005% BAC at 0.050% BAC
Speed:
response 3 seconds, recovery 5 seconds, up to 12 people in one minute according to the maker
Integration:
turnstiles, automatic doors, speed gates and other access control systems, with an adjustable pass range set by company policy
Calibration:
every 12 months with unlimited tests
Power:
12 V, 1.5 A

Spec source: maker's published specifications

Who it suits: sites that already control entry with gates and want alcohol screening built into the same step.

What to know: data storage is not published in the maker's specifications, so ask how results are recorded before you write a policy around it. No US approval is named on the product page. We have no Amazon listing to point you to, so contact the maker for a quote.

Lifeloc SENTINEL for industrial zero tolerance sites

Sensor:
full size 1 inch platinum fuel cell
Sampling:
automatic passive testing with no mouthpieces or straws
Cut-off:
adjustable from .000 BAC up to .02, .04 or any level the employer chooses

Power and housing:
9 VDC 3 A regulated, IP54, operating 32 to 130 F, hinged housing for access on the wall

Spec source: maker's published specifications

Who it suits: mining, construction, oil and gas operators that screen large crews at a fixed entry point.

What to know: the maker publishes no numeric accuracy and names no approvals, so ask for test documentation if your policy needs it. Negatives show immediately and positives take under 10 seconds. We have no Amazon listing to point you to, so contact the maker.

BACtrack Trace Pro as a handheld alternative

Sensor:
Xtend electrochemical fuel cell, Pro Grade line
Accuracy:
+/- 0.005 at 0.050% BAC
Detection range:
0.000 to 0.400% BAC
Calibration:
annual recommended, send-in service

Spec source: maker's published specifications

Who it suits: small employers, sober living homes and event organizers who test a handful of people and have no fixed entry point.

What to know: each person needs a fresh mouthpiece, and the unit is away during calibration. See the bactrack trace professional breathalyzer review and our wider professional breathalyzer comparison.

Planning a wall mounted breathalyzer install

Settle these points before you request quotes.

  • Power at the wall. Venue units like the Soberpoint 3 run on mains power, while access control units list low voltage supplies such as 12 V or 9 VDC. Ask who installs the supply.
  • Placement. Mount the unit where people queue, away from drafty doors and from bar areas where vapor from spilled drinks lingers.
  • Pass level. For entry units, write the cut-off into your policy first. A 0.02 line matches the lowest DOT screening point, and 0.04 matches the threshold for commercial drivers.
  • Calibration downtime. A replaceable sensor lets you swap modules and keep the station running. A unit without one may need a stand-in during service.
  • Records and privacy. If results are stored or linked to badges, decide who sees them and how long you keep them. Two of the three makers publish no data storage details.

What a wall unit can and cannot tell a guest

A wall breathalyzer gives a number at one moment. Alcohol is often still being absorbed after the last drink, so a guest who reads low straight after finishing may read higher an hour later.

This is an estimate. It cannot tell you whether you are safe or legal to drive. If you have been drinking, do not drive.

Venues that install a unit do best when they place it next to clear signs about rides home and when staff never present a reading as clearance to drive. Our legal alcohol limit page explains the numbers guests will see.

Workplace rules and wall units

A wall unit used for entry is a screening tool. Under 49 CFR Part 40, federally regulated employers may screen only with devices on the approved screening or evidential lists and must confirm a screen of 0.02 or more on a listed evidential breath tester. None of the wall unit makers above names such a listing, so regulated employers should check the official lists before buying. Our guide to dot breath alcohol testing explains the full sequence.

Wall mounted breathalyzer questions

Are coin-operated breathalyzers accurate?

The Soberpoint 3 publishes +/- 0.005% BAC at 0.100% BAC, but any public unit depends on regular calibration and on users waiting after their last drink.

Do wall mounted breathalyzers need mouthpieces?

Venue units usually use ordinary drinking straws, and workplace entry units use passive testing with no mouthpiece at all.

How often are wall units calibrated?

Andatech lists every 12 months for both of its units, while Lifeloc does not publish an interval for the SENTINEL.

Can a wall mounted breathalyzer open a turnstile?

Yes, the AccessPoint and SENTINEL are designed to connect to turnstiles, doors or time clocks and release them when the reading passes the set level.

Can I buy a wall mounted breathalyzer on Amazon?

We do not link store listings for the wall units on this page, so contact the maker or a local distributor and ask for a quote.
