Breathalyzer

Breathalyzer for Boat Captains, Charter Operators and Skippers

The best breathalyzer for most boat captains is a fuel cell handheld such as the BACtrack S80 Pro, which runs on AA batteries and needs no phone on the dock. Choose AlcoMate Revo when a charter crew shares one unit and you want swappable precalibrated sensor modules. A personal reading is a self check, not a Coast Guard test, and it cannot clear you to take the helm.

Pick by who uses it and how it is stored on a boat. Specifications come from manufacturer documentation covered in our reviews, not our own testing.

Fuel cell, Pro Grade

BACtrack S80 Pro for a captain who wants a standalone check

Choose the S80 Pro for a clear display without phone pairing. It uses an Xtend electrochemical fuel cell and 2 AA batteries, which are easy to carry as spares in a ditch bag or dry box. Log results on paper or in your trip log if you want a record.

The BACtrack S80 Pro review covers its stated accuracy, operating instructions and send in calibration. Allow the maker's 20 minute wait after eating, drinking or smoking. Keep it out of spray and direct sun, since the manual limits operating and storage conditions.

BACtrack Trace Pro for a slim tester in a go bag

Choose the Trace Pro when space on a small boat is tight. It carries the same class of Xtend fuel cell in a slimmer standalone body. Check the battery compartment before buying spares because the maker's pages disagree on battery type.

Our BACtrack Trace Pro review lists the published tolerance and the yearly calibration recommendation. Buy it when a slim body matters more than a larger display.

BACtrack Trace Pro
Fuel cell, replaceable module

AlcoMate Revo for charter crews and shared use

Choose the Revo when several people on a charter or fishing operation test before a trip. It uses a replaceable PRISM fuel cell module, so you swap in a precalibrated module instead of mailing the unit away in the middle of the season. The maker says to replace the module every 1,000 tests or yearly, whichever comes first, and Type A and Type B modules are not interchangeable.

Our AlcoMate Revo review covers compatibility and recurring upkeep. Buy extra mouthpieces for the crew, and see the mouthpiece guide.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Tolerances quoted at different BAC levels do not prove equal performance near zero.

Federal boating under the influence rules

The Coast Guard sets its own intoxication standard for operating a vessel. It is lower for commercial operators, and states add their own boating laws on top.

SituationWhat it saysSource
Recreational vessel An operator is intoxicated at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or more. 33 CFR 95.020(a)
Vessel other than recreational The threshold drops to 0.04 percent or more. This is the line that matters for charter, fishing and commercial work. 33 CFR 95.020(b)
Any vessel Impairment can also be shown by observation, with no test result at all. 33 CFR 95.020(c)
After a serious marine incident Each person directly involved must be tested for alcohol within 2 hours unless safety concerns prevent it. Testing is not required more than 8 hours after the incident. Devices must be used per the manufacturer's procedures. 46 CFR 4.06-3

Your state boating law may set a different or additional standard, so check it for the waters where you operate. Our legal alcohol limit guide gives broader context, and a driving limit is not a target for the helm.

Why a captain needs a fuel cell, not a keychain tester

Semiconductor sensors drift and can react to substances other than alcohol, and a boat adds heat, humidity and salt air. When the line is 0.04 and an observed impairment can count on its own, you want a sensor that is selective for alcohol and holds calibration.

Our fuel cell versus semiconductor comparison explains the difference. Pick a published tolerance and a calibration route you will actually follow before the season starts.

How to self check before getting under way

Build the check into your pre departure routine, along with fuel, weather and safety gear. Do not use it to shorten a waiting period.

  • Wait the maker's stated time after eating, drinking, smoking or using mouthwash. The S80 instructions specify 20 minutes. This wait addresses contamination in the mouth, not alcohol remaining in your body.
  • Fit a fresh, compatible mouthpiece and follow the sampling prompts. Check the batteries first and keep the tester within its stated operating conditions.
  • Test twice a few minutes apart. Read and keep both results. Do not average them or choose the lower one.
  • If either reading is above 0.000, do not take the helm. This is a conservative personal rule, not the legal threshold.
  • A zero cannot rule out fatigue, medication or impairment from the night before. Hand the helm to a sober crew member if in doubt.
  • Keep the unit calibrated on schedule and note the service date. Our breathalyzer calibration guide explains how to plan it.

Charter and commercial operators have more to plan

If you employ crew, a private tester helps with a consistent pre trip routine, but it does not replace required testing. Marine employers have formal alcohol testing duties after a serious marine incident, and they should follow the manufacturer's procedures and the applicable Coast Guard rules. Our DOT approved breathalyzer guide explains the difference between screening devices and evidential instruments, and our professional breathalyzers page covers bulk and wall mounted options for a marina office or charter dock.

Questions about boating and breath alcohol testing

What is the BUI limit for boat captains?

For a recreational vessel the federal limit is 0.08 percent. For a vessel other than recreational, such as a charter or commercial boat, it is 0.04 percent. Impairment can also be shown by observation. Your state may set its own boating law, so check the rules where you operate.

Can a boat captain use a personal breathalyzer?

Yes, a captain can use a personal breathalyzer for private self checks before getting under way. Choose a calibrated fuel cell model and follow its sampling instructions. A private result cannot replace official testing or prove you are fit to operate a vessel, including when the display reads zero.

Are boat captains tested for alcohol?

Yes, after a serious marine incident, each person directly involved must be tested for alcohol within 2 hours unless safety concerns prevent it, under 46 CFR 4.06-3. Law enforcement can also test an operator suspected of boating under the influence. Your own tester does not replace those tests.

Is a captain's BUI the same as a DUI?

No, but the consequences can be similar. Boating under the influence is its own offense with its own federal and state rules, and penalties vary by state. The BAC thresholds are 0.08 percent recreational and 0.04 percent for a vessel other than recreational under the federal standard.

What is the best breathalyzer for boat captains?

A fuel cell handheld such as the BACtrack S80 Pro is the best fit for most captains who want a standalone check on AA batteries. Choose Trace Pro for slimmer storage or AlcoMate Revo when a crew shares the unit and you want swappable sensor modules. All need scheduled calibration.
