Breathalyzer for Pilots and the FAA 0.04 Bottle to Throttle Rule

The best breathalyzer for most pilots is a fuel cell handheld such as the BACtrack S80 Pro or Trace Pro for a morning after self check before a flight. Choose the S80 for your flight bag, Trace for pocket carry or Mobile Pro for a private phone history. A personal reading does not override the FAA 8 hour rule or prove fitness to fly, even when it shows zero.

Choose a fuel cell tester for your preflight routine

Choose by carrying format and display. Specifications come from manufacturer documentation covered in our reviews, not our own testing.

Fuel cell, Pro Grade

BACtrack S80 Pro for a flight bag check without a phone

Choose the S80 Pro for a standalone display without phone pairing. It uses an Xtend electrochemical fuel cell and AA batteries. Record results separately if needed.

The BACtrack S80 Pro review covers its stated accuracy, operating instructions and send in calibration. Plan for the maker's 20 minute wait after eating, drinking or smoking. Buy this pick for a straightforward flight bag routine rather than app logging.

BACtrack Trace Pro for a slim pocket tester on trips

Choose Trace Pro for a slimmer standalone tester on overnight trips. It uses the Xtend electrochemical fuel cell family and has no app connection or phone dependence.

Our BACtrack Trace Pro review covers the published tolerance and yearly calibration recommendation. Check the battery compartment before buying spares because the maker's pages disagree on battery type. Buy this pick when pocket carry matters more than an automatic history.

BACtrack Trace Pro
Fuel cell with pump

BACtrack Mobile Pro for a logged history on your phone

Choose Mobile Pro if keeping a private history helps your routine. Its fuel cell and breath pump take the sample, while the app displays and saves readings. There is no onboard screen, so a working phone, Bluetooth and the app are necessary.

The BACtrack Mobile Pro review covers its battery and calibration. Check app compatibility and privacy terms. Saved readings are personal records, not airline testing documentation. The app's projected time to zero cannot clear you for departure.

FAA alcohol rules every pilot should know

The waiting period, alcohol concentration and impairment restrictions apply together. Being below 0.04 does not cancel the other restrictions. Airline testing also has a lower threshold that can remove a covered employee from duty.

RuleWhat it saysSource
Civil aircraft crew restrictions No person may act or attempt to act as a crewmember within 8 hours after any alcoholic beverage, while under the influence of alcohol, or with an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater in a blood or breath specimen. The breath measure uses grams per 210 liters. 14 CFR 91.17(a)
Required tests and results A crewmember must submit to testing requested by a law enforcement officer authorized under state or local law. On FAA request, furnish results of tests taken within 4 hours after acting as a crewmember. 14 CFR 91.17(c)
Covered airline duty Covered employees may not report for or remain on safety sensitive duty at 0.04 or greater. Flight crewmembers and flight attendants may not perform duties within 8 hours after using alcohol. 14 CFR 120.37(b) and (d)(1)
Airline results below 0.04 At 0.02 or greater but below 0.04, a covered employee cannot perform safety sensitive functions until a reading below 0.02 or the next regularly scheduled duty period, which cannot start less than 8 hours after the test. 14 CFR 120.221(f)
Alcohol related driving actions Each certificate holder must report every motor vehicle action in writing to the FAA Civil Aviation Security Division within 60 days. This includes covered DUI convictions and alcohol related license suspensions or revocations. 14 CFR 61.15(e)
Conservative planning advice The FAA calls 8 hours bottle to throttle a minimum, advises a more conservative 24 hour wait and warns that hangover effects can persist after 8 hours. FAA pilot safety brochure Alcohol and Flying

Follow your airline's alcohol policy as well as the regulations. A private tester cannot replace required testing. Our DOT approved breathalyzer guide explains screening devices, evidential confirmation instruments and the formal procedures that distinguish an official result from a self check.

Why a pilot needs a fuel cell, not a keychain tester

Semiconductor sensors drift and can react to substances other than alcohol. That makes them a poor choice when you are checking for residual alcohol before flying. Around 0.02 to 0.04, uncertainty matters, especially for a covered airline employee subject to removal from safety sensitive duty below 0.04.

A fuel cell is more selective for alcohol and holds calibration better, but still needs correct sampling and service. Our fuel cell versus semiconductor comparison explains why. Choose a published tolerance and practical calibration route.

If mailing a tester away would disrupt your routine, the AlcoMate Revo review describes a fuel cell alternative with a replaceable precalibrated sensor module. Its different upkeep method does not change the limits of a private reading.

How to self check before a flight

Build the check into planning before leaving for the airport. Do not use it to shorten the waiting period or settle doubts about a hangover.

  • Wait the maker's stated time after eating, drinking, smoking or using mouthwash. Follow the manual for your model. The S80 instructions specify 20 minutes after eating, drinking or smoking. This wait addresses contamination in the mouth, not alcohol remaining in your body.
  • Fit a fresh, compatible mouthpiece and follow the sampling prompts. Check battery power before starting. Keep the tester within its stated operating conditions.
  • Test twice a few minutes apart, allowing any longer recovery interval required by the manual. Read and retain both results. Do not average them or choose only the lower number.
  • If either reading is above 0.000, do not fly. This is a conservative personal decision rule, not the FAA's statutory concentration threshold. A zero result also cannot rule out impairment or a faulty sample.
  • Apply the 8 hour rule even at 0.000. Stay grounded if you have hangover symptoms or doubts about your fitness, and follow any stricter employer policy.
  • Keep the unit calibrated on schedule. Record the service date and arrange upkeep before a trip. Our breathalyzer calibration guide explains service planning.

Pilot specific alternatives

Radiant RampReady is a pocket breath alcohol checker sold through aviation retailers. It shows green, yellow and red bands rather than a numeric reading. The maker states green below 0.020 and red at 0.040 or higher. Those colors do not establish permission to fly, and green can include alcohol above zero.

A numeric fuel cell tester gives more detail than a color alone. Choose the S80 Pro, Trace Pro or Mobile Pro by how you will carry it and read results. Waiting periods and symptoms still apply separately.

A DUI also threatens your certificate

Your decision before driving home also matters to your flying career. Under 14 CFR 61.15(e), a certificate holder must report each covered motor vehicle action in writing to the FAA Civil Aviation Security Division within 60 days. An alcohol related license suspension or revocation can trigger reporting as well as a DUI conviction.

MedXPress asks about alcohol related driving history. A personal tester can support a conservative decision to leave the car parked, helping protect your medical by avoiding alcohol related driving. It cannot guarantee medical eligibility or replace required disclosures. Reporting a motor vehicle action and answering medical application questions are separate responsibilities.

Read the legal alcohol limit guide without treating a driving limit as a safety target. The BAC calculator only estimates alcohol concentration. It cannot measure your current level or clear you to drive or fly. Arrange another ride if there is doubt.

Questions about pilots and breath alcohol testing

What is the alcohol limit for pilots?

The FAA prohibits acting or attempting to act as a civil aircraft crewmember at an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater. The separate 8 hour and impairment restrictions still apply below that level. Covered airline employees can also be removed from safety sensitive functions at 0.02 to below 0.04.

Can pilots use a personal breathalyzer?

Yes, pilots can use a personal breathalyzer for private self checks before a flight. Choose a calibrated fuel cell model and follow its sampling instructions. A private result cannot replace official testing, override the 8 hour rule or prove fitness to fly, including when the display reads zero.

Do pilots get breathalyzed?

Yes, pilots can be required to undergo alcohol testing. Covered airline employees are subject to formal testing requirements, and 14 CFR 91.17(c) addresses testing requested by authorized law enforcement and furnishing test results on FAA request. A reading from your own tester does not replace a required test.

How long after drinking can a pilot fly?

At least 8 hours must pass after drinking, but that minimum alone does not establish fitness to fly. The alcohol concentration and impairment restrictions also apply. The FAA's Alcohol and Flying brochure advises a more conservative 24 hour wait and warns that hangover effects can persist beyond 8 hours.

What happens if a pilot fails a breathalyzer?

An official airline result at 0.04 or greater prohibits safety sensitive duty. A result from 0.02 to below 0.04 also requires removal under the applicable rule. Follow the employer's testing and reporting process. A positive private self check means do not fly, but does not itself determine an enforcement outcome.

What is the best breathalyzer for pilots?

A fuel cell handheld such as the BACtrack S80 Pro is the best fit for most pilots wanting a flight bag check without a phone. Choose Trace Pro for slimmer pocket carry or Mobile Pro for a private app history. All need scheduled calibration and careful sampling before each self check.
